International guidelines for Carbon Neutral Port (CNP) certification

Aiming to expand the Japanese-style port decarbonization assessment method overseas

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, in collaboration with the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association, has issued an international version of the guidelines for “CNP certification,” which evaluates decarbonization efforts at container terminals.

By increasing the international recognition and utilization of CNP certification, we will promote the overseas dissemination of our knowledge regarding decarbonization in Japan’s port sector.

• The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is promoting the formation of carbon-neutral ports (CNPs) that will enhance port functions with consideration for decarbonization and improve the environment for receiving hydrogen, ammonia, and other resources.
• As one of the initiatives to promote the formation of CNPs, Japan operates the “CNP Certification (Container Terminal)” system, which visualizes the implementation status of decarbonization efforts at container terminals and objectively evaluates them in multiple stages from Level 1 to Level 5.
• The international guidelines for CNP certification outline the system and evaluation criteria for CNP certification. By increasing the international recognition of CNP certification and promoting its use in overseas ports, we aim to appropriately evaluate Japan’s port decarbonization efforts and promote the overseas dissemination of knowledge regarding decarbonization in Japan’s port sector.
