ICHCA Member Briefing: Two New Tools Aiming to Improve Safety in Container Lashing Operations

ICHCA International is pleased to draw attention to two independently developed innovations that aim to support safer and more ergonomic container lashing operations. These developments may be of interest to members involved in container handling, lashing activities, and safety improvement initiatives. ICHCA’s rules do not permit us to endorse or assess the relative merits of others’ products, we do however welcome the opportunity to share news of industry innovation in support of worker safety.
1. CEPA CV – Ergonomic Lashing Tool (Belgium)
Developed by CEPA in partnership with the University of Antwerp, local unions, and dockworkers, this tool is part of a broader ergonomic and training initiative led by the Port Work Innovation Hub in Antwerp.
The CEPA initiative includes:
  • A specially designed ergonomic lashing tool developed through a scientific study of movement, posture, and exertional load.
  • A training programme for dockers on ergonomic techniques, stretching, and safe practices.
  • The introduction of impact-reducing safety gloves, now mandatory for lashers in the Port of Antwerp.
Initial results report promising reductions in hand and finger injuries, as well as positive feedback from workers on improved comfort and safety.
Further information, including a user guide and instruction video, can be found at:https://nextlevelcontainerlashing.com

2. SAW “Lash-it” Turnbuckle Tool (USA)

Shared through Signal Mutual’s Solutions-at-Work (SAW) platform, the Lash-itTM tool was developed in collaboration with Hand Safety Tools, in response to safety concerns associated with improvised lashing tools at U.S. terminals.
Key features of the Lash-itTM tool:
  • Constructed from high-strength aluminium, reducing weight while maintaining strength.
  • Extended reach and grip enhancements (longer forks and serrations) for better control and compatibility with various lashing setups.
  • Each tool includes a tether strap to mitigate dropped-object and fall risks.
  • The tool has been reportedly successfully piloted and refined across six terminal operations with broad positive feedback.
