Global Lifting Awareness Day 18 July 2024 Centres on Skills and Employment

Powered by ICHCA member the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) and supporting organisations, #GLAD2024 is now a widely celebrated day where manufacturers, suppliers, and end users are among those that share material that promotes safe and high quality load lifting. The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) has moved products, inspection, and training to the front of its Global Lifting Awareness Day (GLAD) campaign. As #GLAD2024 approaches on Thursday 18 July, LEEA is sharpening its focus on the importance of surrounding these three cornerstones of lifting with high quality.GLAD is an established event where its members, manufacturers, and suppliers lead those sharing material that promotes safe and high quality load lifting across the world. The next Joint Meeting is WISTA's 50 years celebration at the IMO on 17 July.   The latest edition of G2 Ocean's Safety Bulletins can be found on the link below:   CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL SAFETY BULLETIN   Message from G2 Ocean: "All G2 Ocean recipients who work with stevedores, customers, shippers, cargo surveyors and others within the granite industry are requested to forward the bulletin to them. The incident involving a drill bit dropping from a granite block could happen again, in other ports." We are grateful to G2 Ocean for providing details and for raising awareness. ICHCA Radar: AMSA Vessel Inspections Report 2023

  AMSA have published their 2023 inspection report which shows that Heavy Load carriers were the poorest performing ships in 2023, with a detention rate of 16.7%.   AMSA have published their 2023 inspection report which shows that Heavy Load carriers were the poorest performing ships in 2023, with a detention rate of 16.7%. Offshore service vessels were the next poorest with a12.5% detention rate. General cargo/multi-purpose ships were 11.6%, chemical tankers 8.1 % and gas carriers 7.5%. Container ships improved from 8.3% in 2022 to 6.8% in 2023 but still above the 6.3% average for all ship types. the container ship deficiency rate was 3.59, “well above” the 2.68 average deficiency rate for all ship types. AMSA continues to focus on international container ship standards including proper stowage and securing. Cargo Integrity Group highlights cargoes that can compromise supply chain safety

The industry bodies of the Cargo Integrity Group continue in their mission to improve safety in the global supply chain. The Group has identified a number of cargoes, commonly carried in containers, that under certain conditions can cause dangerous incidents.   They urge everyone handling these goods to follow all applicable regulations, the CTU Code and industry best practices. In addition to promoting sound packing and shipping practices, the Cargo Integrity Group aims to increase awareness about the types of goods, often less obvious, that can compromise safety in the container supply chain under certain conditions. The Group has identified fifteen such ‘Cargoes of Concern’ that are commonly transported by sea and intermodally. While these are usually transported safely when regulations and guidelines are followed, the Group has created this list to highlight cargoes that can become hazardous if handled incorrectly.   A full programme of panel sessions and demonstrations of safety equipment and systems will be held across two days of TOC Europe (Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th June) in Rotterdam. ICHCA Radar: Pilot Ladders MAIB

  UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch Pilot Ladder Deficiencies Report for 2023   In 2023, the UK MAIB received 314 reports of pilot ladder incidents. There were seven accidents to pilots while embarking or disembarking vessels. One involved the pilot falling into the water highlighting the need to supervise and test the ladder before every use. Vessel crews must endeavour to rig ladders to avoid the chance of the ladder shifting or paying out and make sure the weight on the ladder is fully supported by the side ropes. Pilot ladders secured by rolling hitches will be less prone to movement than those secured by shackles.
