At last week’s ICHCA Technical Panel Call a number of members of the Panel expressed an interest in this topic and thanks to Panagiotis at HSE for bringing this workshop to our attention.
Workshop Summary
The profession is becoming more aware of the mental health problems and bullying at sea. Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to his or her community. There are special references to Intimidation which occurs when a person, or group of workers, is targeted by negative or aggressive behaviour repeatedly and regularly over a period of time and when individuals can experience difficulty defending themselves.
The workshop reports on the outcome of an investigation carried by C4FF and its European partners into the mental health problems of seafarers, focusing on the identification of these which create or lead to mental health issues with a view to find feasible solutions, thereby making life on board and elsewhere more pleasant.
The discussion is to seek feedback from the attending participants on the investigation work carried out to date and outlined in the lecture.
We appreciate that this is quite short notice and ICHCA has not been involved in the project or workshop. However, we felt that its focus on seafarers made it worthwhile bringing to your attention in case it is of interest and you can find time in your diary.
