Today’s content was produced by: the contributors to day 1 of the IPPC Sea Container international workshop, London, 19 - 20 September 2022. The workshop brought together plant protection organisations and industry in a powerful learning and sharing event. Over 30 presenters addressed wide-ranging topics for two days that were impressively designed and executed by the steering committee: Teppei Shigemi (Japan), Wendy Asbil (Canada), Lars Kjaer (WSC), Lise Kjærgaard Steffensen (Denmark), Frederik Koome Makathima (Kenya), James Hookham (GSF) in partnership with Artur Shamilov (IPPC Secretariat lead). Day 1 of the workshop set the scene for the complexity of the containerised supply chain. It introduced the history of, and challenges that have been faced in, seeking to minimise pest contamination in the sea container supply chain. Today’s content was produced by: the COA, IICL, WSC and ICHCA. The joint industry guidelines for cleaning of containers are for operators in direct control of containers. In a simple table and supporting information, the guidelines set out a template for where and when inspection should occur, identifies the party responsible for taking action and introduces the principal cleaning methods for different types of visible pest contamination. World food security and biodiversity is at risk from contaminating pests. Plant pests and diseases are responsible for the loss of up to 40% of global food crops and trade losses exceeding $220bn annually. The UN Commission on Phytosanitary Measures’ expert Focus Group and Industry Advisory Group are looking at potential pest contamination on sea containers. In particular: container exterior and interior cleanliness, cargo cleanliness as well as risks of pest contamination in the international containerized supply chain. ICHCA is part of the Industry Advisory group. Following the successful re-introduction of the Award in 2021 with its record number of entries, the 2022 award will form the centrepiece of TT Club and ICHCA’s on-going efforts to encourage players in the freight transport and cargo handling sectors further in continuing to improve operational safety and efficiency through innovation. ICHCA Australia at MEGATRANS – 24 – 26 August 2022
This week at MEGATRANS, in conjunction with the specialised bulk handling expo, Australian Bulk Handling 2022, will kick off at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. ICHCA Australia will be represented at the conference with input and presentations from our members HFW and TT Club. MEGATRANS will feature a dedicated conference looking at the supply chain, international trade and shipping, clean energy and electric vehicle, road transport and e-commerce Due to the covid pandemic the event had to be postponed for two years and participants are looking forward to being able to meet again in person and hear from distinguished speakers on the latest developments in the transport and logistics industry. Collaboration – the Key to Safer Transport of Dangerous Goods
Further support to comprehensive safety guidance issued by a collective of organisations late last year has been received through its endorsement by the International Chemical Transport Association (ICTA). Further support to comprehensive safety guidance issued by a collective of organisations late last year has been received through its endorsement by the International Chemical Transport Association (ICTA). Drawing on the combined expertise and experience in the movement of dangerous goods around the world, several global trade organisations -- International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA), International Vessel Owners Dangerous Goods Association (IVODGA), National Cargo Bureau (NCB) and World Shipping Council (WSC) – jointly issued a White Paper entitled, ‘Safety Guidance for Dangerous Goods Storage and Handling Facilities’¹ in December last year. Publication Spotlight: GS10 – Collision prevention at ports and terminals
In a bid to improve safety, reduce injuries and loss of life, equipment damage and minimize costly business disruption at ports and terminals worldwide, PEMA, ICHCA International, and TT Club, pooled resources to make available information to promote collision prevention. The results of this research and consultation fall under the auspices of PEMA’s Safety & Environment Committee. All relevant stakeholders have been involved in the development of this project. PEMA represents container crane and technology suppliers, and TT Club and ICHCA International represent container terminals. Looking forward to September & October… dates for your diary…
We are thrilled to confirm that the prestigious TT Club Innovation in Safety Awards launched on September 1st and are looking forward to seeing examples of how the whole supply chain continues to rise to the challenge of improving safety in our industry. The IMO will again be busy in September with the Carriage of Cargoes and Containers and International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code meetings. ICHCA will be present and active at both of these as the voice for cargo handling and coordination. We are also participating in the IPPC International Workshop on controlling the spread of invasive species via containers in London. This event marks the start of a novel phase of activity which could see new or amended recommendations on sea container cleanliness, potentially within 2-3 years. At our most recent ICHCA Technical panel call, the topic of electric vehicle/Li-Ion battery fires was raised once again. The link below will take interested readers to the recently published Marine Guidance Note MGN 653 (M) from the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency, the regulatory body for UK maritime safety. This guidance aims to raise awareness of the risks and mitigations for the carriage of electric vehicles on board passenger roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ferries. The Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM), operating under the auspices of the UN and taking the lead on plant protection from invasive species continues to actively consider the movement of invasive pests via contamination of sea containers. Whilst it recognises that potential regulatory requirements or changes to container cargo transport could have substantive negative knock-on effects including cost, it continues to seek practical and cost-effective solutions to reducing risks of transfer of pests and contaminants by the sea container pathway. The international workshop 19-20 September in London will be an opportunity for stakeholders to work together to ensure that next steps are indeed practical and cost-effective.
