People from different employers and nationalities, who may have never met before, work closely together for a few days. In this edition of our Safety Bulletin we don’t describe any specific incidents, but push for good relations between vessel crew, stevedores and our G2 Ocean employees. New Year Message from ICHCA’s CEO

  Success in 2023 ICHCA members came together once again in 2023 to deliver improvements in safety and health across cargo handling. With partners we launched a Lithium battery safety paper, improving risk-based knowledge in an area that has been high on industry’s agenda and is likely to continue to be in the coming year. In February we held the TT Club Innovation in Safety Awards as a live in-person ceremony for the first time since lockdown and published a 60 page digest of the incredible creative safety ideas being delivered throughout our industry. Any organisation could look at the digest and see something to inspire their next game changing idea. We continued our monthly Technical Panel Calls; an open forum where you decide what we discuss, ensuring that we explore topics of importance to you. On behalf of ICHCA International and TT Club,we  invite you to join us on Thursday 22nd February 2024 at the TOC Offices, 240 Blackfriars Road, London, for the presentation of the 2023 TT Club Innovation in Safety Award. The ceremony and drinks reception will run from approximately 2:30pm until 7:30pm.   We are celebrating the best safety innovations in the global cargo handling industry for the sixth time. This year, the vast majority of our nearly 30 entrants are new to the award and the variety of submissions we continue to receive each year give us great confidence in our industry and the strides it is making on the road to a safer and more secure supply chain. Use of CTU Code boosts supply chain safety and savings, survey finds

The seven industry bodies dedicated to container safety, collaborating as the Cargo Integrity Group, highlight an independent study carried out by researchers at Italian University Politecnico di Torino into shipper and forwarder application of the CTU Code.  The 2023 survey yielded encouraging signs of adoption and highlighted several convincing arguments – including financial benefits for its use.   The survey highlights multiple benefits to CTU Code users including: Improved safety, reputation and supply chain coordination Decreased cargo damage, environmental impact and operational inefficiencies Those using the CTU Code incurred no extra costs in employees, contractors, or vehicles Any increase in loading and waiting times were typically offset by CTU Code related efficiencies overall Annual costs and penalties reduced from €670,000 pre-implementation of the Code to €13,000 post-implementation Extra costs as a percentage of revenue reduced from 37% to 10%   In the words of the report’s authors (Bruno, et al.), [...]
