Use of CTU Code boosts supply chain safety and savings, survey finds
The seven industry bodies dedicated to container safety, collaborating as the Cargo Integrity Group, highlight an independent study carried out by researchers at Italian University Politecnico di Torino into shipper and forwarder application of the CTU Code. The 2023 survey yielded encouraging signs of adoption and highlighted several convincing arguments – including financial benefits for its use. The survey highlights multiple benefits to CTU Code users including: Improved safety, reputation and supply chain coordination Decreased cargo damage, environmental impact and operational inefficiencies Those using the CTU Code incurred no extra costs in employees, contractors, or vehicles Any increase in loading and waiting times were typically offset by CTU Code related efficiencies overall Annual costs and penalties reduced from €670,000 pre-implementation of the Code to €13,000 post-implementation Extra costs as a percentage of revenue reduced from 37% to 10% In the words of the report’s authors (Bruno, et al.), [...]

Innovation in Safety Award 2023 – profiling last year’s winning entry!
This week we would like to profile the 2022 winner of the Safety Award. A.P. Moller - Maersk successfully entered with the APMT Vessel Inspection App, developed to provide a digital platform for terminals to carry out vessel inspection, based on standardised questions that highlight crucial risk areas in this environment. Since it's conception the app has been globally adopted by APM Terminals and has improved the effectiveness and quality of vessel inspection. Additionally, this digital tool has enabled this process to become paperless, benefitting the environment as well as the safety of workers and the terminal conditions. TT Club Innovation in Safety Award 2023
Continuing our profile of last year's finalists, NCB Hazcheck (Exis Technologies) entered with its real time Cargo Screening solution. This tool was established for shipping lines to assist in identifying mis-declared or undeclared cargo. This early intervention allows Dangerous Goods teams to question shippers and arrange cargo inspections to prevent incorrect stowage of goods. This detection system screens over 10 million requests a month and have reported that clear patterns are emerging where shipping lines are consistently identifying similar cargo types which are commonly undeclared or mis-declared. First up, Intermodal Telematics BV's Tank container temperature monitoring system, allows people to monitor the condition of goods. This innovation addresses the challenge presented by the multimodal way of transportation of Dangerous goods, with hardware developed for ISO tanks and Rail Tank Cars. ICHCA invites submissions for 2023 TT Club Innovation in Safety Award
Entries are now coming in for the 2023 TT Club Innovation in Safety Award. You are also invited to make a submission, anyone involved in cargo logistics who can show a demonstrable improvement to safety is welcome to make an application. ICHCA International, the global cargo handling association, launched the 2023 TT Club Innovation in Safety Award today inviting entrants to submit details of their innovations by 13 November 2023. The Award, which is open to an individual, team or company involved in cargo logistics, has seen the prestige associated with winning or being highly commended, grow year-on-year. Past winners have ranged from individual entrepreneurs and specialist suppliers to employee teams in major industry businesses. PEMA and ICHCA sign MoU to advance sustainable practices and safety standards in the cargo handling sector
Two international associations closely involved in the port and terminal industry are committing to cooperate in improving safety and sustainability across the global industry. The Port Equipment Manufacturers Association (PEMA) and International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA) have announced their joint signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to effect their mutual aims. The collaboration will enable each organization to better achieve their objectives through a programme of cooperation, which will include agreed actions and initiatives, meetings, sharing and exchange of information and ad hoc task forces to enhance their respective impact on issues and topics where both organizations have a common interest. The MoU provides a framework to pursue cooperative projects.
