Statement on postponement of ICHCA Spring Meeting 2020

Following close monitoring of the recent rapid global developments on the spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus, and discussions with the board of ICHCA, it has been decided to postpone the planned ICHCA / HSE workshop and attendant meetings scheduled to take place in Buxton   This decision has not been taken lightly, but has been made in the best interests of our exhibitors, visitors and staff, and is fully supported by our commercial and event partners.  Their wellbeing and safety is our first priority and will always remain so.   The decision has been taken as early as possible to enable our stakeholders to minimise the impact on business. ICHCA will be rescheduling the planned workshop in partnership with HSE at the earliest opportunity.

ICHCA International and HSE launch initiative to develop a step change in port health and safety management practice

ICHCA (International Cargo Handling Coordination Association) and HSE’s Science and Research Centre (Health and Safety Executive) will be hosting a unique collaborative workshop in April, which will develop a new industry-wide strategy to provide much needed improvements to safety across the port sector. This one day facilitated workshop, which will take place on 7 April at HSE’s Science and Research Centre in Buxton, UK, will form part of a larger ICHCA health and safety convention that includes the biannual meeting of the organization’s Technical Panel on 8 April. This Technical Panel will bring together experienced practitioners, legislators, consultants and other interested parties from across industry to debate and develop good practice in cargo handling worldwide. Chairman of ICHCA International, John Beckett commented: “Despite dramatic improvements in the safety record for handling marine cargoes in ports over the last 20 years, the reduction in incidents has stagnated and there have been [...]

2019 – a busy year for ICHCA

The year passed so quickly, looking back it is hard to contemplate the activities undertaken on behalf of, or with our membership. Members who regularly read this newsletter will be aware of some of these activities, but here I will summarise the key highlights. IMO Much activity took place at the International Maritime Organisation where ICHCA celebrated 50 continuous years as an accredited NGO (Non-governmental organisation on consultation). The Maritime Safety Committee is the main body for making legislative decisions affecting our industry, but we tend to focus our attention on the sub-committees of MSC where the substantive work is undertaken. Early in the year we took part in SDC#6, the 6th session of the “Ship Design and Construction” sub-committee. At this session the work on developing new guidance for “Safe Mooring Operations” was concluded. This is an activity that many of our members take part in and is still [...]
