ICHCA Radar: InterCargo bulk carrier casualty report 2013-2022
This Intercargo report notes a reducing trend in bulk cargo vessel losses over 10 years, against an increase in bulk fleet numbers from 10,000 to 13,000 in the period. However it also notes that vessel losses still occur and it is vital to learn from and continuously improve safety performance.
2013-2022 saw 26 bulk carriers over 10,000 dwt reported lost, critically at a cost of 104 seafarer lives. Grounding was the single greatest cause of carrier loss (46%), but with no loss of life. Liquefaction was the greatest cause of fatality with 70 seafarers lost (63.7% of the total).
