Free Introduction to the CTU Code on-line course
ICHCA member NCB Hazcheck (Exis Technologies) has developed an Introduction to the CTU Code on-line course which aims to familiarise anyone new to or looking for a refresher on the principles of the Code of Practice (CTU Code) for packing of cargo transport units (CTUs). ICHCA Radar: Investigation report into fertiliser chemical reaction onboard MV Purple Beach

In this ICHCA Radar we spotlight a report published by The German Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation into the serious marine casualty caused by a chemical reaction within a fertiliser load onboard the vessel Purple Beach in 2015. Thankfully there was no loss of life, injuries or pollution, however the vessel was ultimately scrapped as a result of this incident. ICHCA Radar: Report on natural hazard risk to global port infrastructure published in ‘Nature’
ICHCA finds or is sent a wide range of industry related learning and informative content that is not necessarily part of an immediate workstream but which we think will be of interest to members. In this ICHCA Radar we spotlight a report published in Nature addressing the natural hazard risk to global port infrastructure from multiple natural hazards. It looks at 50 ports and quantifies the risk of cyclone, fluvial, pluvial, coastal and earthquake hazards to physical assets and services (port-specific risk) and maritime trade flows (trade risk), finding that 86% of the ports considered are exposed to more than three natural hazards. Industry bodies unite in producing Guidelines for safe transport of Lithium-ion batteries in containers
First in a series of in-depth advisory publications aimed at minimising the risks of transporting lithium-ion batteries and cells launched amid heightened concern over container fires. The Lithium-ion Batteries in Containers Guidelines seek to prevent the increasing risks that the transport of lithium-ion batteries by sea creates, providing suggestions for identifying such risks and thereby helping to ensure a safer supply chain in the future. Together with its partners, the Cargo Incident Notification System Network (CINS) has compiled a comprehensive publication covering the properties of these batteries and their potential to explode, initiate fires and emit toxic gases. Extensive measures to safely transport what is an exponentially increasing volume of lithium-ion batteries, in their various states or charge and when also contained in electronic devices are fully examined including, classification and regulation, container packing, landside storage, stowage onboard ships, incident detection and fire suppression, and loss prevention and risk mitigation.
