We must innovate for a safer supply chain

So say TT Club and ICHCA which, with the support of TOC Europe, are emphasising their message by launching an inaugural Safety Village at the upcoming conference and exhibition in Rotterdam between 14th and 16th of June. The first of its type, the exhibition space will be dedicated to how innovation can lead to a safer supply chain. Recent widespread disruption to global supply chains and the consequent pressures on freight transport capacity and cargo handling facilities requires a corresponding focus on safety measures throughout the system. As the success of the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award programme, operated by ICHCA International, has proved, there have been numerous ground-breaking innovations with multiple applications aimed at reducing these safety risks. However, the two organisations are keen to raise the awareness of the need for continuous development of the ways that we manage safety. Featuring a meeting area and presentation facilities, [...]

Examples of Valued Features in Safety Related Applications Used by Cargo Handlers

ICHCA is an active member of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Informal Working Group on the Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units.  One of this group’s workstreams is the potential development of a CTU Code App. We were asked to survey members for cases studies of cargo handling safety related applications.  Understanding functions and features valued by users in existing applications could then feed into design considerations of a future CTU Code app.  ICHCA members were asked “If you are using an App for a safety-related activity - it does not have to be CTU or packing related - please share your experience and insight”. The attached member update summarises the findings from four application case studies: Incy.io, iAuditor, APMT Vessel Inspection App and Hazcheck DGL Lite.  It shows some of the user identified benefits for each.  The paper concludes with 18 features that were [...]

UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch safety digest 1/2022 published

A new collection of cases (volume 1 of 2022) detailing accidents involving vessels from the merchant, fishing and recreational sectors is now available for free download from the UK MAIB web site. This includes 16 merchant vessel incident investigations including mechanical, navigational and manoeuvring failures.  It also includes an interesting thought-piece about the importance of cultural and interpersonal competence raising challenges about communication, coordination, collaboration and empathy.  In this case in marine operations, but we would argue equally important throughout the cargo handling chain.
